ABOUT
The Home Hotel, Zürich – expect the unexpected
The Home is situated within the Sihlcity shopping and leisure centre in Zürich, a former paper mill area. Stylt’s mission was to craft a homey and snug hotel experience with a big wow-factor, based on an inspiring and relevant narrative.
Thus, The Home unfolds a storyline that brings another angle to this city; a city that for most people brings associations of tradition, elegance, wealth, business and banking. But there is a different and somewhat unexpected story waiting to be told and interpreted – about a creative revolution, made in Zürich, that still makes its mark.
It all started when the First World War was raging, and people from all over Europe found a refuge in Zürich. Paradoxically, times of crisis often evoke engagement, bring out creativity and brilliant ideas. That’s what happened to a group of artists who established a café, the Cabaret Voltaire, in the heart of the city, on February 5th, 1916. This was the moment when the Dada art movement was officially born, and the somewhat conservative city of Zürich became the focal point for local and international artists and creatives, free-thinkers and rebels.
The dadaists wanted a new paradigm in art and culture, officially calling their art anti-art. They awakened the desire to question the present with new and surprising forms of artistic performance, expressed through art, music, theatre, literature and dance. However short-lived, Dada constitutes something like the Big Bang of Modernism. It paved the way for later movements as diverse as surrealism, pop art and punk; a huge source of inspiration for future art, music, literature, fashion, graphic design and many more.
Drawing inspiration from the locale's industrial legacy as well as the avant-garde Dada movement, we've imbued the hotel with the essence of these free-thinking individuals and eccentrics who once turned Zürich into a haven for creativity, daring to defy norms and challenge the established order. The outcome is an artistic and stylish haven for local friends, digital nomads and creatives. This is the home of gastronomes and gamers, a fusion of hospitality and culture, and a seamless blend of business and pleasure.
The overall design concept of this hotel celebrates artistry and the art of different collage techniques. Just as Dadaists experimented with combining disparate elements, different layers of materials and bold combinations of colors and patterns have been used to create a lively and dynamic yet harmonious ambiance. The hotel's warm earthy color palette forms the backdrop for this creative endeavor, subtly twisted with accent colors to add tasteful surprises throughout the space.
Throughout the hotel, boldness and warmth, playfulness, colorful tones, and surprising graphical patterns abound, inviting guests to immerse themselves in a world of creativity and imagination.
