ABOUT
Designed by Dubai’s renowned LW Design, the property masterfully blends Kuwait’s rich heritage with modern sophistication, while paying homage to the Art Deco legacy of the original Waldorf Astoria in New York.
A centerpiece of the hotel lobby is the magnificent Waldorf Astoria Clock, a contemporary tribute to the iconic timepiece that graced the original Waldorf Astoria in the 1930s. Beyond its beauty, the clock reflects the historical importance of astronomy in Islamic culture. For centuries, Arab nomads relied on the stars to navigate the desert and determine prayer times and the direction of Mecca. Honoring this legacy, a detailed solar system is depicted within a world globe perched above the clock’s base, where each celestial body holds symbolic meaning.
Crafted entirely from stainless steel with a brushed and polished gold PVD finish, the clock's construction is both striking and precise. Eight curved glass panels pivot elegantly within a sculptural bracket. Inside, a fixed orrery showcases the planets, each intricately handcrafted from Bohemian crystal, revolving around a central golden sphere representing the sun. Below the globe, a two-dial mechanical clock, encased in a glass and metal structure, is embellished with Mother of Pearl chapter rings that add further refinement.
The clock was conceptualized by LW Design, with fabrication led by Smith of Derby, one of the world’s most respected clockmakers with over 166 years of expertise. Over 18 months, the clock was designed, engineered, and assembled in the UK in collaboration with specialists for the orrery, curved glass, and luxurious finishes. The result is a modern masterpiece that captures the essence of Waldorf Astoria’s craftsmanship and elegance.
Surrounding this iconic feature, the lobby’s interior tells a deeply rooted Kuwaiti story. Walls are adorned with curated fine art sourced from local and international galleries. These artworks abstractly interpret Kuwait’s history, landscapes, and cultural moments, creating a powerful visual connection for guests and evoking a sense of place.
The space is elevated with intricately inlaid marble across the sculptural staircase and reception counters. Notably, the flooring features a luxurious composition of silver portoro, calacatta oro, and Kuwaiti onyx stone, a rare and locally sourced material that brings warmth and authenticity to the design. This regional stone not only celebrates the natural beauty of Kuwait but also grounds the space in local identity.
A palette of champagne gold, silver, warm wood, and soft leather further enhances the refined ambiance, balancing modernity with tradition. Paying tribute to Kuwait’s heritage and future, decorative elements and accessories draw inspiration from the sea, desert sands, and the nation’s pivotal role in trade history. This narrative is crowned by the Falcon Feather Sculpture, a dynamic centerpiece in the lobby. Created by Capsule Arts in collaboration with artist Ranim Orouk, the piece honors the Saker Falcon, Kuwait’s national bird, symbolizing grace, power, and cultural pride.
Together, these elements create a timeless yet locally resonant experience that defines Waldorf Astoria Kuwait.
