Perched high above Kansas City’s renowned Country Club Plaza, Momentum KC crowns the tenth floor of the Cascade Hotel. This semi-private rooftop lounge was conceived as an elevated social retreat—intimate yet lively, refined yet expressive. The design draws inspiration from the quiet vigilance of a bird in flight, translating movement, observation, and poise into a layered interior environment where materiality, form, and atmosphere work in concert.
Arrival unfolds as a gradual reveal. A mosaic stone floor sweeps through the lounge, guiding guests toward a dimly lit bar and seating area arranged to encourage both conversation and contemplation. The stone references the surrounding district’s Spanish-influenced architectural heritage, introducing a contemporary rhythm through scale and pattern. Throughout the space, a saturated emerald palette envelops walls and banquettes in velvet, creating a cocooning effect that heightens intimacy and acoustical comfort while reinforcing the club’s immersive identity.
At the heart of the lounge, a sculptural bar anchors the room. Clad in fluted tile and softly illuminated, its curved form recalls wings in motion, an abstracted gesture that introduces dynamism without literal interpretation. Nearby, a two-sided fireplace wrapped in sage-toned marble becomes a focal point and spatial organizer. What began as a fixed architectural constraint was reimagined as a glowing centerpiece, offering warmth, orientation, and visual continuity across the compact footprint.
Material contrasts were carefully calibrated to balance richness with approachability. Rustic wood plank flooring grounds the space, offsetting polished stone and metallic accents with tactile warmth. Overhead, a bronze ceiling installation with branching forms and integrated botanical elements spans the lounge, subtly animating the ceiling plane, giving physical expression to the project’s nature-driven narrative.
Moments of discovery are layered throughout. An arched portal lined with custom floral wallcovering dusted in metallic mylar leads to elevated restrooms, extending the material story beyond the main lounge. A bottle keep of personal reserves provides members with a sense of ritual and return, blending storage with identity. Enclosed by brass screening and velvet drapery, the private dining room effortlessly flexes between refined privacy and engagement—open to the pulse of the lounge or softly secluded as needed.
Outside, a rooftop terrace frames panoramic views across the surrounding district, extending the lounge’s social tempo into the open air. Fire features, layered seating, and sheltered zones invite guests to linger well beyond sunset, allowing the terrace to remain active across seasons while maintaining a sense of intimacy.
Behind the scenes, spatial planning ensures the lounge remains animated yet comfortable. Support spaces are discreetly integrated to preserve a sense of ease, allowing momentum to build organically without disruption. An effortless rhythm takes shape, pairing cocooned moments with expansive views and shared presence, allowing guests to settle into a rare vantage—quietly lifted, observant, and removed from the city beneath.
