ABOUT
Foshan Danzao is one of the renowned "Lingnan Cultural Cities." The Guangfu culture thrives here in a symbiotic relationship with the local environment. The unique Lingnan water town culture, characterized by lion dance martial arts, dragon boat racing, and the ancient Xiangang Village, is steeped in a rich cultural heritage that is truly intoxicating. We have conducted multiple research projects on Danzao's cultural and historical aspects. The final outcome of our efforts breaks away from tradition and offers a refreshingly interesting update to the city's image. The Ramada Hotel in Danzao, Foshan, takes the essence of Lingnan culture as its design starting point. By integrating modern innovative materials, it endows the space with a cutting-edge contemporary aesthetic expression, creating an immersive experience for guests that resonates with the spirit of Lingnan in every dimension. The canopy at the hotel entrance is inspired by the aesthetic of the upturned eaves of traditional Lingnan architecture. Through modern design deconstruction and reinterpretation, the traditional curved roofline is transformed into straight lines. The layered structure made of metal subtly captures the rhythm of the upturned eaves while aligning with the minimalist language of contemporary architecture, elevating a functional element into a cultural symbol that transcends time and space. The lobby draws inspiration from the "meandering pathways" of Lingnan gardens, using framing and borrowing techniques to layout the space. Each functional area maintains its independence and privacy, yet the transparent sightlines interconnect them. As guests stroll through, they can experience the Lingnan garden's "one step, one painting" atmosphere, blending traditional spatial aesthetics with modern functionalism in a poetic fusion. The space cleverly incorporates the Lingnan "Manzhou window" element, with diamond-shaped lattices embedded with handcrafted colored glass. When the light flows through, the petal-like shadows dance like falling blossoms, adding a lively modern vitality to the warm traditional charm. The restaurant takes its inspiration from the structural aesthetics of dragon boats. While retaining the original building's truss system, it transforms and reorganizes the elements into an array that progresses in layers like a dragon's spine, infusing a dynamic life imagery into the robust structure. The guest rooms follow the overall design elements of the hotel, translating traditional architectural symbols into modern spatial cores through contemporary design techniques. The central feature is an artistic glass screen shaped like a pot-eared house, creating a translucent interface of light and shadow. The minimalist base is enhanced by material juxtaposition and symbol deconstruction, distilling a light and elegant Lingnan aesthetic in the contemporary context. The luxurious yet understated design and cultural symbols reflect the interwoven charm of Lingnan culture and modern refined living. This embodies Samzu's refinement and evolution of refined modernism.
