ABOUT
Ann Arbor, Michigan, holds an undeniable charm. It’s a city where ivy-covered brick buildings line tree-filled streets, and the air hums with the energy of one of the world’s leading universities. Yet there’s a new addition to the vibrant campus landscape: The Vanguard Hotel. Moments from the University of Michigan, this upscale hotel isn't just a place to rest, it’s an invitation to embark on a curated journey through worldly traditions, landscapes, and experiences – all seen through the eyes of the traveler. Guided by the legacy of James Burrill Angell, the longest-serving president of the university, the Vanguard channels his spirit of curiosity and pursuit of global perspective, blending rich history with contemporary design to offer a destination that awakens the wanderlust-driven soul.
The experience begins in the sunlit lobby, where every surface, shadow, and artifact hint at a journey of curiosity waiting to unfold. Sweeping arched openings shape the path through the main floor, presenting moments of pause and passage that guide movement and invite exploration. A hand-crafted reception desk recalls vintage French travel trunks, detailed with warm wood, textured touches, and custom compartments that suggest a place for safeguarding life’s treasured finds. Through a softly lit black mosaic portal, guests discover La Serre, a French brasserie that draws from the natural world with Parisian charm. From a cobblestone entry to a sweeping brass-accented bar, the space evolves into two distinct private dining experiences: a lush solarium drenched in greenery and a moody, velvet-lined wine cellar that captures the warmth and stillness of a fine wine at rest.
Upstairs, a bespoke chandelier of delicate gold metal and fluted clear lenses suspends above a communal table, guiding guests toward the event and meeting spaces. The pre-function and ballroom areas blend masculine and feminine design cues with a Provence-inspired palette, grand chandeliers, and sculptural archways. Daylight transforms the atmosphere, shifting from ethereal calm to warm evening sophistication.
In the guestrooms, global references are expressed through thoughtful details: modern writing desks, vintage trunk-inspired minibars, and a curated collage of artwork – letters, found imagery, and a portrait of James Burrill Angell – that brings a living, breathing narrative to the space. Chevron wood patterns on floors and closet doors echo the folds of envelopes, while Juliette balconies and private terraces offer moments of quiet reflection above the city.
Throughout the hotel, portals frame transitions between spaces, creating rhythm and inviting moments of pause. The art collection adds layers of narrative, from a stairwell of monochromatic vintage frames to a curated geode display that celebrates the joy of learning. Together, these moments form a layered, transportive guest experience – one of exploration, memory, and timeless elegance.
