ABOUT
Neo Futuristic architect John Portman’s 1987 atrium hotel welcomed the Mandarin Oriental to Singapore which has been reborn with lightness, colour and a sense of the tropics.
Guestroom designs reflect their location in the hotel. Marina Bay views are influenced with a dappled batik pattern and merge with the steely blue waters from the Bay. Ocean views take a cue from a rising sun, and the city view rooms reignite the original architectures desire to have planters that terrace down the facade covered in greenery. Cerused oaks contribute to a lighter island style that is tailored and bespoke but still somehow looser around the edges. There is a heightened mix of cultural influences, which support a sense of place.
In public spaces the bold foundation of classic colonial ebony and ivory stand firm with the strong geometrics forms of the building. The lightness in the enhanced lobbies provide backdrops for art, and colour, places to sit and mingle and enjoy the atrium. Crystal spheres of Vanda Joaquim orchids explode from the new Lobby Lounge wafted up through the Lily pond. A cozy ring of clay surrounds the lower levels and lightens as it climbs, with calligraphy inspired wallcovering along the marina and ocean view corridors. They are complemented by a third corridor design to the garden suites and residences. It welcomes you with its variety of art, and furnishings that establish a residential alike.
